About the In the Hayloft Quilt Pattern

The In the Hayloft quilt pattern is an easy to assemble, beginner friendly quilt pattern. It finishes at 61″ x 61″, making it a perfect lap quilt, but large enough for cozy family moments. It’s easy to assemble and is best suited for yardage (aka scraps).

This pattern is ideal for using up some of your scraps or leftovers from a fat quarter bundle. I’ve made different variations from scrap yardage and leftover fat quarters. It would also be a great way to use up low volume fabrics for the background, too. It’s also ideal for solids or any type of fabric collection and would work well using similarly colored scraps and low volume background fabrics.

The charm of the In the Hayloft pattern is its straightforwardness. Even beginners will find this quilt pattern easy to grasp and possibly your new favorite go-to pattern. And, that striped border and sashing use strip piecing to insure everything goes together smoothly.

In the Hayloft Inspiration

I’ve become a little obsessed with single block designs in a quilt and wanted to highlight the beauty of an individual block.

The inspiration for In the Hayloft came about because I wanted to create a design that leaned a little Americana. This led me to became a wee bit obsessed with barn quilts. I loved how singular designs were able to be highlighted and stand out…like on the side of a barn.

I decided to design a quilt that would highlight a single design, sans the actual barn. Since a barn quilt over my garage would look out of place, instead, I highlighted the block by using a decorative border.

In the Hayloft is designed for quilters of all skill levels. The big blocks allow you to perfect trimming and piecing.

What sets In the Hayloft apart is the pattern’s simplicity. The pattern features clear and concise instructions along with detailed diagrams, ensuring an enjoyable quilting experience. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or just beginning, you’ll relish each step of this creative journey.

Mix & Match Fabrics

In the Hayloft works well with both a fabric collection or solids. It would also look amazing by pulling similarly-colored scraps together to create a one-of-a-kind quilt!

Personally, I think there’s something incredibly satisfying about pulling random stash fabrics together to transform them into something so beautiful. Personally, I can’t get enough of giving new life to fabrics that might have otherwise been forgotten.

One Pattern with Tons of Options

The In the Hayloft pattern may only come in one size, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have options. I’ve pulled together a few unique options to get some ideas flowing.

  1. This variation uses solids from the Art Gallery Pure Solids collection for a soothing, modern take.
  2. This uses a collection called Sunshine & Sweet Tea from Riley Blake Fabrics.
  3. My good friend Heather Valentine from The Sewing Loft has a fun line of fabrics called Color Club and I used some bold, fun colors for this design. Check with your local quilt shop or Etsy for fabrics.
  4. I took the fabrics from #2 above and created a design that eliminated the sashing and decorative border. Note: These fabric requirements are included in the upcoming In the Hayloft Pattern Suite. Watch for an email with a special offer!
