About the In the Hayloft Quilt Patterns

The In the Hayloft Pattern Suite is a collection of 4 patterns with 5 different variations, including a decorative border option. It’s easy to assemble and is best suited for yardage. And the best part, the big block barn star design insures the quilt goes together quickly.

This pattern is ideal for using up some of your scraps or leftovers from a fat quarter bundle. I’ve made two variations from scrap yardage and leftover fat quarters. It would also be a great way to use up low volume fabrics for background fabrics, too.

In the Hayloft Inspiration

I’m completely committed to making quilting fun and accessible to all levels!

I originally designed In the Hayloft as a wall hanging mini quilt project for Riley Blake Fabrics. I wanted to make a pattern that incorporated big blocks to create a design.

Big blocks are a great tool for honing your half square triangle and flying geese skills Because of this, you’ll be able to quickly cut and assemble a quilt while mastering some basic quilting techniques.

What sets In the Hayloft quilts apart are the pattern’s simplicity. The patterns feature clear and concise instructions along with detailed diagrams, ensuring that you never feel overwhelmed. Whether you’re an experienced quilter or just starting out, you’ll enjoy every step of the process.

Below is a short description of each of the patterns in the In the Hayloft pattern suite.

The In the Hayloft Quilt is a perfect lap quilt, but large enough for cozy family moments. It’s easy to assemble and is best suited for yardage.

This pattern is ideal for using up some of your scraps or leftovers from a fat quarter bundle. I’ve made different variations from scrap yardage and leftover fat quarters. It would also be a great way to use up low volume fabrics for background fabrics, too.

The charm of the In the Hayloft pattern is its straightforwardness. Even beginners will find this quilt pattern easy to grasp and possibly your new favorite go-to pattern. And, that striped border and sashing use strip piecing to insure everything goes together smoothly.

Something to note about the star points. Because this is a big block design, it’s easy to get great points. Really, really great points!

In the Hayloft Mini Quilt

This is the original In the Hayloft wall hanging project that I created for Riley Blake Fabrics and includes two options. One option includes the decorative border and the other option removes the border.

Below are a few samples I made as I was working on the pattern. I used scraps, stash, and unused fat quarters to create these designs.

The second option for this pattern removes all of the borders and makes it the perfect size for a table topper. I can see either of these options working in a variety of fabrics with unlimited possibilities.

The third option came about because I wanted to make a change to the original In the Hayloft pattern. By removing the sashing and decorative border this created an ideal crib quilt.

I also changed up the fabric color placement to give you an additional option. This slight change in block design can also be used with the In the Hayloft Quilt Pattern as another option.

The big block design makes this a great weekend project. It’s super simple to assemble and you’ll be amazed at how quickly it goes together.

Removing the sashing creates a slightly different design which gives it a more modern look. This could be made in a variety of different fabrics. There is literally not enough time for me to make the number of mockups I’ve envisioned. To me, with this option, the possibilities are endless!

In the Hayloft Table Runner

The table runner came about because I really, really love seasonal table runners that can stay out a little past the holiday. And I realized that In the Hayloft would provide that option.

My sample fabric has tiny hearts in the fabric so I can use it for Valentine’s Day but still leave out until Easter. But, I could see this in Fall, Christmas, or patriotic colors. It’s so versatile and it’s a favorite for me because it’s a great project for quilters who are ready to take it up a notch because the reduced the size of the star is a great way to hone your quilty skills.

Plus, for those of you who are more ambitious, you could easily add more stars and increase the border sizes. Whenever I remake this table runner, I’ll be sure to add this to the QR Code page.

Mix & Match Fabrics

In the Hayloft is designed to use yardage, but will also work well with scraps and fat quarters! The collection below uses Riley Blake Spring Barn Quilts fabrics by Tara Reed, Basics in LeCreme for the background, and Bee Ginghams Red Caroline for the backing for the In the Hayloft Mini Quilt.

The Decorative Border

One of my favorite things about this quilt is the decorative border. The corner blocks are strip pieced so they go together without any matching issues. While the pattern samples (see above images) are pretty simple and designed to set off the barn star, I could see the border in reverse colors by swapping the lighter value fabrics with darker value fabrics. Doing this would create an entirely different look for this design!
