Today’s topic: Specialty Scissors
There are a few specialty scissors that work really well with machine embroidery. (may contain affiliate links)
1. Gingher 6” Double Curved Embroidery Scissors
If you can only get one pair of scissors for machine embroidery, these are the ones to get.
You would use these scissors mainly when doing machine embroidery applique. The curved handle makes all of the difference.
I would not have been able to embroider this design without these scissors.
There are places where you need to cut away excess fabric in corners and tight spots. Nothing works better than the double curved handle for reaching these places.
These are also ideal for cutting jump stitches. They are very, very sharp, and that makes them ideal for slipping under tight threads and cutting.
They retail for around $25.00 but can be purchased at Joann’s with a coupon.
2. Fiskars 4” Curved Craft Scissors
When you are machine embroidering there are all sorts of threads that will need snipping. These scissors have curved blades and and are small enough to fit into tight spaces.

These scissors are also excellent for reverse applique. You wouldn’t want to accidentally cut into your under-fabric.

OMG, so when you applique, you actually cut the design to be larger than the thing you are appliquing on? and then you use the knife edge scissors to cut away the excess? I’d love to see what that looks like “in progress”!
Thanks for this series, by the way. I don’t embroider but I’m enjoying reading through your posts!
