The Janome Magnolia 7318 is a great choice if you prefer something mechanical over something computerized.
It sells for less than $300 and has simple-to-use dials for all of your stitch adjustments.
I consider this a user-friendly, reliable machine without all of the bells and whistles.

The Janome DC1050 has all of the features you would expect to find on a high-end Janome Decor machine, allowing you to sew with precision and confidence.
Recently, I was able to sew for an entire day on a Janome machine very similar to this one and I was impressed at how simple it was to use and how well it sewed.
For under $400 this machine has a lot of practical features that simplify sewing.

The Juki TL 2010Q is a Single Needle Lockstitch Machine for straight stitching and quilting is also perfect for tailoring, dressmaking, and home decor items.
The Juki 2010Q can be used as a tabletop machine, mounted into some cabinets or used on machine quilting frames. Personally, I’ve used mine to longarm on a Grace Frame.
The Juki 2010 is portable and has a built-in carrying handle. Sewing area extension shown in the picture is included with the Juki 2010 sewing machine.

If you’re wanting an entry-level machine that sews and embroiders, look no further than the Brother SE400.
For just over $300 you get a machine that allows you to sew, quilt, and embroider. This would be a great choice for the absolute beginner.

If you are ready to upgrade to a machine that has both sewing and embroidery capabilities then this would be an excellent choice.
A little pricey at just under $1,200 but loaded with some of my favorite features.
I’ve owned the Babylock Allure (made by Brother) which is nearly identical. My machine was extremely reliable and easy for a first-time machine embroider to understand. It sews and embroiders extremely well.
While the price might be a little prohibitive for most sewists, this is a good machine for someone looking to upgrade and begin machine embroidery.

Another option is the Brother PE770 Embroidery-ONLY Machine.
This machine sells for just over $600 and only does machine embroidery.
If you currently own a sewing machine that works well for you but want to branch out into machine embroidery then this machine would be a great addition.
I consider it a good option for someone who is happy with their current sewing machine and wants to try machine embroidery.
Don’t forget to find a comfortable chair for sewing.
Arrow has a variety of chairs to fit most sewists.
I prefer an adjustable chair with a hydraulic lift, but the key is finding one that fits your body so that you can sit comfortably while sewing.
If you are on a budget with limited space then you will love the Gidget I Sewing Table from Arrow.
It can be purchased in the $100 range and is very sturdy for the price. It will fit most standard sewing machines and has an opening that raises and lowers.
I love that you can purchase a custom insert from Arrow that will fit almost any sewing machine.
One of its best features is the steel-locking legs that fold for easy storage.
For the price, I consider this one of the best options for both its durability and design.
If you own a larger sewing machine, you might want to consider the Gidget II Sewing Table from Arrow which retails around $200.
It is almost identical to the Gidget I, but has a bigger opening to accommodate a large sewing machine. The table also includes wheels to allow for easier movement.
One thing to note about this table vs. the Gidget I: The Gidget I is made with particle board while the Gidget II is constructed from MDF (medium density fiberboard).
With this table it is strongly suggested that you order the custom acrylic insert to fit your particular sewing machine due to the size of the opening.
The Heavyweight Table is specially designed to fit your vintage Singer Featherweight!
It’s beautiful black finish and gold decals will complement your 221K or 222K beautifully.
It is a sturdy table with an opening that is specifically sized to fit your Featherweight, so it offers free arm and flatbed sewing without the need for an insert.
And contrary to what the name implies, it’s completely portable, so it’s perfect for taking to classes and retreats, or packing in your RV.
A little on the pricier side, this table’s best feature is it’s ability to rotate vertically for storage. The table is height adjustable and has a sewing machine opening that can accommodate larger machines.
It also includes steel legs and locking industrial coasters. You can order a custom acrylic insert, but you will need to check with Arrow for your specific sewing machine.
Overall, it is a versatile table that is large enough to spread out a sewing project or use for a large cutting table.
When I tested this table I found that the height adjusting crank was pretty easy to operate and it was very, very stable.
