Inside: A list of Gifts for Women Who Quilt, Sew, and Craft

What type of gift do you give a woman who loves to quilt, sew, and craft? I bet you anything she has a long list of things she’d love to own. Below are a few of my most favorite things that I use every day. If you’re shopping for yourself or someone who loves to quilt, sew, and craft, then give a few of these ideas some serious consideration.

For my list, I’ve chosen a few of my most favorite things that I use every day. I wish I could be like Oprah and give every one of these things away, however, the best I can do is make you aware of the best deals on these items.

Accuquilt is one of those things that I use on a regular basis. Why? Because I can cut a ton of squares or strips in a few minutes. I also love their appliqué dies for quick appliqué projects.

For me, I’m giving serious consideration to one of those Go! Fabric Cutters. The way I see it, I could spend a weekend cutting out designs and an entire year sewing the quilts.

If you’re thinking about getting your feet wet with an Accuquilt, then the smaller Go! Me is the one to get. Maybe one for you and one for a  friend!

If you’re an experienced quilter then you might want to consider the large AccuQuilt Go! Electric Cutter or the new Studio 2 Fabric Cutter. A little pricey but a great idea if you’re a serious quilter.

Every sewist dreams of owning the perfect iron that gets really hot and can produce a ton of steam. This is that iron.

  • The iron has a built-in water heater that pre-heats the water before it comes out of the soleplate (as in, no leaks or drips).
  • The steam function is only activated when you touch the handle and push the button.
  • There are two steam settings (actually, three if you count the Off setting) so you can steam delicate fabrics or heavier fabrics.
  • The High Steam function can be used to steam hanging garments.
  • One of my favorite features is the ability to bypass the auto-shutoff.
  • The Velocity 200IR also has an anodized aluminum soleplate which glides effortlessly across fabrics.

Reliable Ironing Boards

When only the best will do. After owning the same ironing board for nearly 40 years (it was a wedding shower gift!), I splurged on one of these ironing boards. Keep in mind, my old ironing board still works and is super steady. However, it’s kind of dinky. All Reliable ironing boards have huge ironing surfaces and extremely steady.

The Reliable Corporation makes three main ironing boards:

Reliable 100IR – It’s all in the details. Reliable Ironing Boards are made in Italy and are considered one of the finest ironing boards around. The board is super sturdy and has an iron rest on the end which is permanently riveted and heat resistant. The ironing surface is HUGE and the single wishbone legs make for a perfectly steady ironing surface.

Reliable 200IR – This board includes everything that makes the Reliable 100IR so wonderful, but is even sturdier because it has double wishbone legs.

Reliable 300LB 2-in-1 – This is the board I own and I can’t say enough good things about it. It is huge across the surface and comes with an attachment that converts to a large rectangle when I need to press large pieces of fabric or over-sized linens. It’s very stable and I love the heat-resistant iron rest on the side. Since I tend to frequently drop my irons, this feature is essential. In my mind, it’s the perfect ironing board.

Cricut Maker

Cricut has taken it up a notch with the new Cricut Maker which is designed for all types of crafts. Technically, I don’t own this (yet!) because it’s so new. I put it on the list and here’s why:

  • Cuts the most materials, from the most delicate fabric and paper to matboard and leather.
  • Digital sewing pattern library. Access hundreds of patterns from brands like Simplicity®and Riley Blake®. Pick a project, and the machine cuts all the pieces you need.
  • Expandable suite of tools that grows with you as you learn each new craft.
  • Rotary Blade. With its gliding, rolling action, this blade cuts through virtually any fabric quickly and accurately – without backing material.
  • Extra-deep Knife Blade that works like an X-ACTO knife to slice through heavier materials like 2.4 mm (3/32”) balsa wood and matboard with ease.
  • Easy-to-learn Design Space® software. Fully loaded with advanced features including Offline Mode, Print Then Cut, and SnapMat. For iOS, Android, Windows®, and Mac®.
  • 50 ready-to-make projects. Includes 25 digital sewing patterns plus more projects that demonstrate what Cricut Maker can do.

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Why did I put a pressure cooker on a list of things for sewists? I’ll tell you why. At some point in the day, you’ll have to stop working on your project(s) and go make dinner. Well, what if you could make dinner in under 30 minutes? What if you could put everything in a magical pot, set a timer, and have dinner ready to serve at 6:00 pm? What if you could put something in a pot and 15 minutes later dinner is ready?

That’s why I put a pressure cooker on a list of things for people who love to quilt, sew, and craft.

Here’s why the Instant Pot is so awesome.

  • The 6 qt. pot is stainless steel. Stainless steel is the safest cooking surface. I’ve started seeing other brands of electric pressure cookers with Teflon-coated inner pots. I highly advise you to avoid these at all costs. Stick with the stainless.
  • It’s a Slow Cooker. Not just any slow cooker, either. Like the best slow cooker, I’ve ever had. It cooks in four hours and then goes to a true Keep Warm setting that no longer cooks your food.
  • It Sautés. If you want to put a roast into the slow cooker, but you want to brown the meat and caramelize the onions, well, the sauté feature does this quite well. Try doing that in a regular slow cooker.
  • It’s a Yogurt Maker. I know lots of folks don’t want to mess with making their own yogurt, but it’s so easy with the Instant Pot. If I get it ready before I go to bed at night, I have yogurt in the morning. Kind of a no-brainer if you ask me.
  • Beans in 30 minutes! Seriously, I can make a perfect pot of beans in 30 minutes (20 minutes if they’re soaked).
  • Broth. I make and use a ton of broth because it is so nutritious and helps the body heal. However, it can take 24 hours to simmer a good broth OR 90 minutes in the Instant Pot! 120 minutes and you’re done! And, no nutritional value is lost.

Or, you could wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday and order a little something extra for yourself!

  1. I jut got an instant pot and it is a real workhorse! It really lives up to what people are saying about it. The other night I made risotto in it. It was easy and delicious.

    1. Priscilla, I have use of only 1 hand & have started to get arthritis in the usable one. I have found the accuquilt to be very easy to use. Most models have a hand crank, but I don’t have to hold it tightly for it to move. Some quilt stores have 1 you can try out or rent for an hour. You might check with your local shop. There is an electric one but it is more pricey, of course. Good luck!

  2. Just a heads up – the Silhouette Cameo was not compatible with my new laptop which had Windows 10 installed – so be sure to check first!

  3. Please tell me how different is the Instant Pot & the Cuisinart Pressure Cooker I own. I enjoy my Cuisinart & it does all the things you say the Instant Pot does, but I am wondering if I need to have an Instant Pot also.
    Thank you for answering me.

    1. Well, I’m starting to think I need two Instant Pots for big days like Thanksgiving. However, the major difference I see is the Cuisinart’s pot is teflon (or something) coated. Since you are cooking at high pressure, I can’t think that having some sort of chemical coating is good. There are several new studies that contend teflon coating is possibly way more harmful than originally thought to be. For me, I would avoid any type of coating just to be on the safe side. Is it possible instead of ordering a whole new pot that Cuisinart offers a replacement stainless steel pot?

  4. Leslie, Amazon has a black friday deal on the instant pot ($78 and change), and Kindle Fire is $34.99. Happy shopping y’all.

  5. Awesome! I wasn’t aware of several of these items and am going to put them on my wishlist! Kudos for including the instant pot. I have had mine for almost two years and as a vegan family of five I can say it has completely changed my life! For any whole food cook it really simplifies enough that you can imagine room in your busy schedule for crafting! Thanks! I so enjoy your newsletter!

  6. This is a great list. Over time I have purchased most of these items on my own,but I would also have to add the Oliso Pro is an incredible iron. It was a toss up with the Oliso and the Velocity, but there were several more features on the Oliso that sold me. There, can you make your list longer 😀

    1. Love my Oliso iron, but the only thing I hate about it is it does not get nice and hot like my normal iron. That means my husbands cotton shirts look like rubbish! So glad I kept my old iron so I can so both, one for quilting and one for his shirts!

  7. Hi, Just bought this to use in my sewing room with Craftsy. The first thing I did was try to get the app, but I just couldn’t find it. I finally found this message from Craftsy Maybe if you already own the app, you can still use it. Bummer!

As of April 2016, Craftsy no longer offers an app for Kindle devices due to continuous compatibility issues with Amazon. If you previously downloaded a Kindle Craftsy app, you have not lost any of your classes or account information, simply log into your Craftsy account using a browser at http://www.craftsy.com. We *highly* recommend using any browser that you can download on your Kindle except for Silk – the native Silk browser on Kindle devices does not play well with Craftsy, so we’d recommend using another browser such as Ocean. Otherwise, you may want to access Craftsy from another device or your computer/laptop.

  8. Sorry, I meant to say that I bought the Kindle Fire that you recommended in a recent email that linked to this post about sewing gifts.

  9. Thanks for all the information on these products. The Reliable iron is definitely going to be my next iron. The money I have spent on other steam irons that spit and sputter after just a few months of use more than justify the cost of the Reliable iron. I have read many good reviews about the Reliable Iron from all the sewing sites and blogs I read. I really enjoy your website and all the interesting projects and info you post.
