A tisket, a tasket, a fabric Easter Basket. And speaking of Easter baskets, I have a few simple fabric basket ideas that are easy to make and don’t take a ton of time.

The Tiny Town Tote is more than a toy for children. When I first designed this pattern I thought, while being fun for kids, it would also work for all sorts of holiday-themed decor. I recently found this adorable bunny-themed fabric at Fabric Supply on Etsy and knew it would make an adorable Easter Tiny Town Tote.

Because I didn’t add any appliqué embellishments to this tote, it went together quickly and is perfect for creating a fun Easter vignette. I added a few simple decor items that I picked up at Hobby Lobby to make it more festive.

I also made a couple of Easter-themed baskets that will be {early} Easter gifts for family members. For one of the baskets I used the same fabric as the Tiny Town Tote. It’s got more of a Spring look rather than being full-on Easter. I also think it could easily fit into a little girl’s room as a storage basket once Easter has passed.

The second fabric basket I made is a little different. I used another bunny fabric that has a hand-sketched look. It’s hard to see, but there are these adorable red mushrooms in the fabric. It’s ideal for decorating a more neutral space. I also think it would work nicely as a storage basket after Easter. The fabric also came from Fabric Supply on Etsy.

How I Made the Baskets

  • To create both of the fabric baskets I used a variation of my Free Storage Basket which goes together in about an hour.
  • For my sizing changes I reduced the overall size so it would make better sized Easter baskets. My fabric rectangles and foam interfacing are 9″ x 15″ and my handles are 4″ x 10″.
  • I used Bosal fusible foam interfacing to stiffen the basket and handles. The Bosal foam interfacing is fusible on BOTH sides which allows me to fuse the lining to the basket once it is completed. However, in order to quilt my project before assembling I needed to fuse the exterior fabric to the foam interfacing.
  • I used a non-stick pressing sheet called a Goddess Sheet to prevent the other fusible side of the foam interfacing from fusing to my ironing board. It’s about 17″ x 24″  and my whole project fit nicely into it. I also recommend using this when making Tiny Town Totes.
  • I did some quick diagonal stitching using a walking foot and a guide. To quilt the exterior fabric rectangles I drew diagonal lines from corner to corner and then quilted them either 1″ or 2″ apart.
  • My fabric basket tutorial doesn’t include handles. For these baskets I cut handles into a size that fit the basket. I did NOT fuse the foam interfacing to the handles prior to stitching. Instead, I stitched up the seam using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Then I cut two pieces of foam interfacing 1.5″ x 10″. I threaded the interfacing into the handle casing using a large safety pin. Once inside the handle, I pressed it with a hot iron then topstitched.

Throughout the project, I followed the basic tutorial directions and order of assembly. It’s pretty straight-forward and anyone who can sew a straight line can make either the Tiny Town Tote or a Fabric Storage Basket.

Now, it’s your turn to have some fun making your own unique Easter baskets.
