Tell me ~ what is better than soft buttery lip balm on dry chapped lips. Here’s the deal, I have to be extra cautious with lip balms because I have Celiac Disease. Yep, some lip balms have vitamin E that is derived from wheat. If I were to use one ~ I would have a serious reaction that could involve an Epi-Pen. Because of this, I began my search for a DIY Butter Lip Balm that I could make myself thereby insuring the safety of my ingredients. This recipe contains cocoa butter and all the other ingredients are safe and aren’t too difficult to come by. Also, it is just the right amount for a dozen tubes of lip balm. Which is good because you have to buy lip balm tubes by the dozen. So, start saving those empty lip balm tubes. I didn’t do this and I had to purchase mine. {Links to supplies below}
Gather the ingredients (printable recipe below) together. You will need 2 T. Coconut oil, 1 T. Cocoa Butter*, 1 T. Sweet Almond Oil, 2 T. Beeswax {*if you have a kitchen scale this would be 0.5 oz.}
DIY Buttery Lip Balm

Before you start melting your ingredients begin simmering a pot of water. Line up your lip balm tubes on a flat surface. I used a cutting board. Be sure to leave enough room to pour the mixture into the tubes. Filling the tubes happens pretty fast so you will want to be prepared. If you have a double boiler then use this. I don’t have one so I improvised. I took my 4 C. Pyrex measuring cup and set it over a small pot of simmering water. That way, I would have a pouring spout. Add the coconut oil, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and beeswax to the glass measuring cup or bowl on top of the simmering water. Slowly melt all of the ingredients in the glass measuring cup or bowl. As soon as everything is melted and blended together remove the mixture from the heat. Moving quickly, begin pouring the melted oil into the empty lip balm tubes. Allow the lip balm to harden and top them with caps. Wipe off any excess that remains. I also had a small empty jar on hand ready for any left over mixture. This worked perfectly and I was able to capture every bit of my DIY Butter Lip Balm. Here’s the best part. When I did the math it comes out to $.30/lip balm. Not bad considering almost everything is sourced organic and there are no hidden ingredients.

I cannot wait to make this. Love the ingredient list. Question – why peppermint oil and could another EO be substituted? Hope you start writing more about EO as it is such a hot topic right now. I love Young Living oils but in great need of more education regarding their use.
As always, such a great post. I love the variety of your blog.
Thanks for mentioning EO’s. I plan to add projects in on a regular basis. If you hover over my navigation bar under ‘Other Interests’ you will notice a new topic, “Herbs and Essential Oils. Both of these topics will get regular posts.
To answer the ‘why Peppermint oil’ question. Almost any oil would work, but peppermint works great with the cocoa butter – you get a minty/chocolate flavor! Woot!!!!
Love this balm! What a great tutorial. pinned to my beauty homemade board! Great gift idea….or maybe just for me:) found at friday frenzy linky. Have a wonderful weekend.
This looks so simple! Would this work if you don’t add essential oils? I have a sweet orange essential oil I just bought. Would that work? I’m new to using essential oils. I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts!
You can certainly leave out the essential oils. I do not recommend using any citrus oils because they are photosensitive and could darken your lips.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe and tutorial! I’ve just started looking into making homemade beauty products for my daughter because I don’t want her using a bunch of chemicals on her beautiful skin. I love that you explained your process in a way I can understand and I pinned this for (near) future reference.
This is great – thanks for sharing and linking up with us at the #WWDParty!
Absolutely love this, can’t wait to try it!
Yum! These look fantastic! I finally got around to making my own lip balm a few months ago and it’s so much nicer than store bought. I used orange to flavor it, but mint is always good too. Pinned for next time 🙂
I love making lip balm. great recipe. Thanks so much for sharing with Adorned From Above’s Link Party.

These are fantastic! What cute gifts they would make!
Love this! Thanks for posting….can you substitute raw shea butter for the cocoa butter?
Yes, I’ve done it myself.
Could you use avocado oil or Vitamin E for sweet almond?
It’s worth a try.
What’s the shelf life of this lip balm?
Two – three months.
When you say a measurement like 1 T., what does that mean? Is that supposed to be 1 tablespoon or 1 teaspoon?
In “recipe talk” a capital T always means Tablespoon and a lowercase t always means teaspoon.
I have made balm using the same proportions substituting cocoa butter for the shea butter and avocado (and one time grapeseed oil) in place of the sweet almond oil. Works perfect every time. The proportions in this recipe are perfect so a big thank you to the creator!
Hi..I am planning to make lip balms with ur recipe. One question, can I replace almond oil with jojoba oil and add add peppermint oil (in what quantity). Also can I use castor oil along with coconut oil? Also, when U say T in quantity , is it tea spoon or table spoon?
I recommend you try some of these options and see which one works best. I’d probably avoid castor oil. T = Tablespoon t = teaspoon
