Why I Love Pre-Cuts

I’m always hearing from readers about how hard it is to find time to sew. Believe me, I get it. I struggle with this problem, too.

One of the ways I tackle the time issue is by using pre-cuts such as Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and Charm Packs. You may recall that I recently whipped up a Simple Baby Quilt using a layer cake kit. By using a kit I was able to get right into sewing my project. It was fun, fast, and I had a blast making the quilt.

Why I Love Fabric Precuts

One of the other true benefits of using pre-cuts is the way it limits waste. If you have a small area for your sewing then this is going to be one of your best options. You have everything you need to make your project and the added benefit of not needing to store lots of fabric and supplies for future projects.

One of my favorite pre-cuts is the Jelly Roll. There is a ton of fabric all rolled up into a small area. Talk about solving storage issues. A jelly roll can fit into a small supply box or even a drawer. It is ready to go when you have the time to sew and there is virtually no waste.

When you have limited sewing time, this can be a huge benefit. Just pull out your jelly roll and sew together a few strips for your favorite project!

For example, I love the cheerful colors of  this Vintage Picnic Jelly Roll by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics.

Of course, this Jelly Roll pairs perfectly with Fat Quarter Shop’s Jelly Roll Jam Video. I’ve made this pattern before. It is fun, fast, and easy. You can put together a quilt in half a day.

How’s that for saving you some time!

This image will show you exactly which fabrics are included in the jelly roll. I kind of love every fabric here. They are all so cheerful and remind me of Spring.

And, for those of you who decide to purchase your own Jelly Roll, I suggest you check out Craftsy’s Magical Jelly Roll video which is full of great quilt ideas using precuts. (affiliate)

  39. I’m new to patchwork and sewing in general. Cross stitching has been taking up all my time for years! I’d love to start with this beautiful set of fabrics. I fancy a mini quilt to start with, which I could pop in a frame to hang on the wall for all to see! (Well that’s the idea – I’m not sure it will merit a place on the wall!)

  40. Lovely fabrics! Precuts definitely save time. Seems I spend hours just cutting and then can be too tired to sew. With precuts I even get to skip the put away all the cutting stuff so I can get out my sewing machine.
