There’s nothing like technology to make life a little easier. With gardening being so non-technical it’s easy to overlook something like Gardening Apps that Make Gardening Easier.
Planning a garden can be challenging because there are so many factors that go into planning a successful garden. How big should my garden plot be? Which crops should I choose? When do I plant tomatoes? What is that bug in my garden?
Well, there are several apps that can help you answer these questions and I’ve put together a few to help you with your gardening needs. Some of the apps are for iPhones/iPads, but several have Android options. Check them out and see which of these works best for your gardening needs.
This app is for iPhones and iPads and can integrate with your Mac computer. The app will send you planting reminders when it’s time to plant. My favorite feature is its ability to adapt to your location which is ideal since every growing area is different. Currently, the app sells for $7.99.
Want the best organic gardening advice? You can thank Mother Earth News for this app. I have been a fan of their organic gardening advice since forever. When I think about the amount of information that has been shared via the magazine, I feel certain that this app will help you manage your garden quite well. One of my favorite items is the companion planting feature. This app currently sells for $7.99 and is available for iPhones and iPads.
This app is for those of you who already have an idea about what you want in your garden. I really like how visual this app is ~ you can see exactly what you’re planting. While not as sophisticated at the the first two, it does have some great features. The cost for this app is currently $3.99 and is available for iPhones and iPads.
4. Sprout It
Sprout It has a ton of information and is easy to use. One thing to note, it is sponsored by Miracle Grow so the information won’t be from an organic gardening viewpoint. That said, plant dates, plant spacing, and harvest are things every gardener needs to know. For a free app, this one really packs in a lot of information. Did I mention (at least 3x) it’s FREE and available for both iPhones and Android phones.
5. Garden Time Planner by Burpee
This one is from Burpee which sells a ton of seeds. Again, not all of the information is from an organic gardening viewpoint (but they are coming around) and many of their recommendations will be for using hybrid seeds (which isn’t always a bad thing) but they also have information on non-GMO seeds, too. Get this FREE app for both iPhones and Android phones.
Garden Squared in a FREE Android only app. What I like about this app is how it has planning features for small spaces such as square foot gardens and patio gardens. Since many of you grow veggies in small spaces I thought this app would be useful.
If you have a garden, you’re going to have bugs. I love the idea of being able to quickly identify them using my smartphone. The app costs $.99 and is available for iPhones. I think they are updating it and it may soon be available for Android phones.
Not everyone uses a smartphone, so I’ve included a couple of browser-based gardening websites that offer some of the same advice.
This online garden planner has a 30-day free trial which can help you plan out your garden. It is the website that goes with the Garden Plan Pro app (#1 above)
One of the features that stood out for me is their commitment to sustainable gardening. This site is free when you sign up by email with optional upgrades and extensions for a fee.
