Welcome back to All About Machine Embroidery.
Today’s topic: Specialty Scissors
There are a few specialty scissors that work really well with machine embroidery. (may contain affiliate links)
1. Gingher 6” Double Curved Embroidery Scissors
If you can only get one pair of scissors for machine embroidery, these are the ones to get.
You would use these scissors mainly when doing machine embroidery applique. The curved handle makes all of the difference.
I would not have been able to embroider this design without these scissors.
There are places where you need to cut away excess fabric in corners and tight spots. Nothing works better than the double curved handle for reaching these places.
These are also ideal for cutting jump stitches. They are very, very sharp, and that makes them ideal for slipping under tight threads and cutting.
They retail for around $25.00 but can be purchased at Joann’s with a coupon.
2. Fiskars 4” Curved Craft Scissors
When you are machine embroidering there are all sorts of threads that will need snipping. These scissors have curved blades and and are small enough to fit into tight spaces.
They are not at sharp as the Gingher’s, but they are great for quick snips. Which you will have a lot of when machine embroidering.
I found mine at Joann’s and bought them with a 50% off coupon. Because they are so inexpensive, I will just replace them when they get really dull.
3. Gingher 6” Knife-Edge Applique Scissors
I’ll admit, I don’t use these scissors everyday. However, when I need them, they are the best. They are ideal for applique. Especially when there are larger areas of fabric to trim, such as the pumpkin below.
The excess orange fabric around the pumpkin could be trimmed really fast using these scissors. {You would use the scissors in #1 above to trim the eye, nose, and patch}
These scissors are also excellent for reverse applique. You wouldn’t want to accidentally cut into your under-fabric.
Your best price will probably be at Joann’s when they have a sale or a 50% off coupon.
There you have it. Three pairs of scissors are all you will need for machine embroidery.
