Drapery Journey

Four years ago today, we moved into our current home.  Unlike our other homes, this house needed very little and even things like the paint and draperies went with everything we owned.  This sort of arrangement can make you a wee bit complacent when it comes to home decor.   Weeelll, a few months back I had an epiphany of sorts; I realized everything in our current home was from two houses ago!  Since then, I've been on a (low budget) tear about needing to update a few things.

Thing 1:  The living room draperies....I started with these which actually matched my furniture (a sure sign that somethings might need a little updating) and even blogged about it here.

By the way, someone actually bought the valance and curtains from me on Craig's List which is great because this beast ain't so easy to store and I think it might've stuck out of my garbage can.

Thing 2:  I made curtains from cotton drop cloths because they are so dang cheap!  When they were finished, they looked a little too plain so I added a 6" strip of fabric near the top.

Definitely a step in the right direction, but I still wasn't in love.  For all practical purposes, I considered this project finished...well, not really, but I let my hubby believe that it was completed.  A couple of weeks later, we were in Calico Corners to pick up some free samples when I spotted this fabric...

...which was $45/yard...waaaayyy out of my price range.  But there was a sale AND I had a coupon, so I was able to score enough to add a splash to my living room.

Thing 3:  So, down came the drapes for a third (and final) time...

Not really, they will come down again when the room gets repainted.  Which is soon, I hope.  My color choice is clean and neutral (less beige - more gray): Benjamen Moore's Hazy Skies.

Although I love the new curtains, what I really like is how you turned the pictures into a valance of sort. I love that unexpected pop of interest.
